Len Turner, who is starting up the men’s-only recovery group, said it is held every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Fishers Point Community Church. He said Celebrate Recovery helps people with “hurts, habits and hang-ups.”

People in the group could be recovering from chemical dependency, co-dependency, childhood trauma, dysfunctional families, abandonment, depression, anger issues, sexual abuse, sexual addictions and other issues. Turner said group leaders are not licensed counselors but assist members of the group by using the Bible and a curriculum called the 12-Step Study.

“We’re reaching out to the souls that are hurting,” Turner said. “There are people on the street where you’ll walk up to them and say, ‘How are you doing?’ They’ll say, ‘I’m OK.’ There are some deep hurts in those people, but they just put on a mask. This is an opportunity where they can just let their hair down and be open and be themselves.”

The recovery group is based on four books and has 12 steps and eight principles based on the Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Mark. Each session lasts about two hours, with opportunities to get together in the beginning and end of each session. Occasionally, there also will be testimony from people who have already gone through the program.

“Every other week we have people come in and tell their life stories and give hope to the others as they explain how Celebrate Recovery and Jesus Christ have worked in their lives to help them overcome issues that they’ve had in their past,” Turner said. “It’s an amazing thing. I’m always dumbfounded when I hear people’s stories and how bad it had been for them and how coming to Celebrate Recovery has helped.”
