Round Up grants awarded – Boone REMC’s Operation Round Up board of trustees recently awarded several grants, including: Reece Thompson of Troop 350, Girl Scout Troop 1834, Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding, The Virgil Benge Community Sports Complex, and the Zionsville Lions Club. New sorority members – Zionsville Chapter of philanthropic sorority, Psi Iota Xi, welcomed new members for the upcoming year. It was a special evening for the group. The chapter has been in existence for over 90 years. Because of this long history, several generations have been members of the sorority at the same time. Pictured are the newest 3 generation members, Haley Frye (center) was initiated to join her grandmother, Fanny Rosenstihl (left) and mother, Rene’ Frye (right).

Spanish students excel – Congratulations to over 60 Spanish students from Zionsville Community High School who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2017 National Spanish Examinations. Students from Zionsville Community School earned a total of 2 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals on the exams.

New roadwork project – Milestone Contractors has begun work on a $1.4 million project to add turn lanes at the Interstate 465 and U.S. 421/Michigan Road interchange on the north side of Indianapolis. All interchange ramps are planned to remain open during the project. Some lanes at the interchange will be temporarily narrowed and shifted to maintain traffic and provide space for construction. The project is anticipated to be complete by November.

Library book sale – Friends of the Library will host a used book sale from May 19-21. Sale times are: May 19 beginning at 5 p.m.; May 20 and 21 during regular library hours.

Parks programs – Birthday and Box Turtles, 1 to 4 p.m. on May 20 at Zion Nature Center. The Zion Nature Center is celebrating 15 years and you’re invited to the party! We can’t think of a better gift to receive than our completed box turtle exhibit. Join us for a birthday bash filled with crafts, games, activities, opportunities to meet our nature center animals and so much more.

Theater Thursdays – Boone County Senior Services, Inc. brings back Theater Thursdays on the third Thursday of each month with a special morning movie at the Lebanon 7 Theater, 1600 N. Lebanon St. for those ages 60 and over. The cost is $1/person and includes a breakfast snack. Upcoming movies include: May 18 – Mother’s Day; June 15 – My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. VA Aid session – Zionsville Meadows is sponsoring VA Aid and Attendance to be held at 2 p.m. on May 18 at the American Legion Post 79, 9950 E. 600 S.

Lunch and Learn On the Road – Boone County Senior Services announces the 2017 lineup for Lunch and Learn On the Road. Lunch and Learn On the Road is for people age 60 and over who would like to travel with us by motor coach to see different parts of our state and learn something new, plus enjoy a special meal. Upcoming dates include: July 26 – Spirit of Chicago boat cruise. Spend time on Navy Pier shopping before embarking on a two hour Lake Michigan lunch cruise. Learn more at www.booneseniors.org.

American Pickers to film – American Pickers is returning to Indiana. This documentary series explores the world of antique picking by following Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and their team as they search for valuable antiques. They will be visiting the area in June. Meeting dates – The Boone County Solid Waste Management District Board meeting dates for 2017 have been announced. All meetings begin at 8:30 a.m. and are held at the County Annex Building, 116 W. Washington St., Room 105, Lebanon. The meeting dates are May 18, July 20, Sept. 21 and Nov. 16.

Garden Club plant auction – The Village Garden Club will hold a plant auction at 10 a.m. on May 30 at Mulberry Fields, corner of Mulberry and Ford Road. Proceeds from the auction will be used for the club’s beautification projects and grants. Questions may be directed to 317-873-1898.

Emerging Leaders applicants sought – The Emerging Leaders Project is a free, yearlong development program designed to help build the Democratic Party’s bench in Indiana. Each year 40 Hoosiers, aged 21-40, are selected to participate in four, day-long training sessions that expose them to various aspects of political campaigns, policy and public service. The Project is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 class. Church rummage sale – Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., will host its semi-annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 3. The sale will feature more than 17,000 square feet of clothing, electronics, home and garden, housewares, china, books, toys and much more. Vacation Bible School – Zionsville United Methodist Church is now accepting registrations for its summer Vacation Bible School, which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 5-9. Free seminars for seniors – CarDon & Associates is partnering with Indy Mature Living to help educate Indianapolis-area seniors about issues related to home ownership and post-retirement downsizing. Learn about Beatlemania – Author Aaron Krerowicz will present The Beatles: Band of the Sixties from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on June 13 at Westfield Washington Public Library, 333 W. Hoover St., Westfield. Explore the music of The Beatles in this 60-minute multimedia presentation (part history and part musical analysis) spanning the full 1960’s: beginning with the band’s seminal visits to Hamburg, continuing through Beatlemania, and concluding with Abbey Road.
