Mad Duck Outdoor Sports promotes fishing in families

Westfield isn’t home to any large lakes, but Greg Evans said there are plenty of spots to fish  within city limits.

The Westfield resident opened Mad Duck Outdoor Sports at the Union, 136 N. Union St., in February, but he expects business to pick up with warmer temperatues on the way.

“My dad introduced me (to fishing) when I was very young, and I just fell in love with it,” Evans said. “It was an automatic for me. My desire to fish surpassed any other desire I had in life. Growing up, I would ride my bike  5 miles to Geist Reservoir and wade around the reservoir fishing.”

As for local opportunities, Evans said residents may be closer to where the fish are than they realize.

“Probably 75 percent of homes in the Westfield area are around a retention pond that has some sort of fish they can catch,” he said. “Westfield and Carmel parks systems have lakes and rivers and ponds that you can fish in. You can venture out further to any of the natural lakes. Indiana is full of opportunity for bank or boat fishing.”

Mad Duck Outdoor Sports sells hunting and fishing supplies, excluding guns and ammo. In addition to sales, Evans said one of his missions is to plant a love for fishing in kids.

“We are trying to bring retail fishing products to Westfield families, and also we are going to try to create a desire for kids to fish,” he said. “That’s the goal, to try to make people fish more than they do now.”

An open house grand opening celebration is scheduled for May 20. Guest speakers will present on family fishing tips as well as tournament information. To pre-register, send names, ages and fishing skill of participants to [email protected].
