Pro-Active Resources in Carmel will host a four-part series of classes designed to help families of drug and alcohol addicts beginning July 6.

The center’s president and executive director, Martin Berg, said addiction is an ongoing problem in Hamilton County, both for those using drugs and their loved ones.

“A lot of times their family members don’t really understand what is going on, how they can help, what they shouldn’t do,” Berg said. “Right now, with the heroin epidemic, a lot of parents of young adults are very frustrated with not knowing where to get help for themselves or for the loved one who is addicted. We decided to do these classes as a way for the family members and loved ones to learn more about addiction and what help is available for them.”

The sessions are 90 minutes long and build on the previous class. The cost to attend all four classes is $100. Therapist Richard Hobbs, who has worked in the field for more than 30 years, will facilitate the program.

“He’s got a particular interest in helping families of people who are addicted,” Berg said. “This is something he is doing with a lot of passion.”

Berg launched Pro-Active Resources more than 30 years ago. The center is certified by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addictions as an outpatient provider.

“We also have structured programs for domestic violence and anger management,” Berg said. “We’re going to be adding several new programs, including a continuing care program that is for people who have already been through our treatment program or any other treatment program.”
