HCLA applications – The Hamilton Co. Leadership Academy is accepting applications for the 2016-2017 class. HCLA is a leadership program that identifies and prepares informed leaders for our community. The program is open to Hamilton Co. residents or those with business or civic activities within the community. Informational meetings will be held at 8:30 a.m. May 10 at the Westfield City Services Building, 2728 E. 171st St., Westfield and 8:30 a.m. May 26 at the Fishers Public Library, 5 Municipal Dr. RSVP for the meeting by emailing Laura Crum at [email protected] or calling 317-606-0324. National Day of Prayer – Joining people of faith around America, those coming to this year’s National Day of Prayer event in Carmel will focus on prayer for the nation. This year’s observance will take place on May 5 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Carmel City Hall Gazebo. If it rains, the event will meet inside City Hall in the second floor City Council Meeting Room.

Cheer team championship – On April 22, the USA National All Girl Cheer Team won the gold medal at the International Cheer Union World Championships. The event was held at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL. Former Carmel High School students, Kirby Lynch and Kaylin Lapel competed for the USA team.

History Day awards – Several Carmel students are coming home with medals and/or prize money after winning awards at the National History Day state contest. Those students include: Bailey Ward, Shiva Vallabhaneni, Crystal Xue, Peter Haines, Jessica Zhang and Grace Hong.

Grants awarded – Susan G. Komen Central Indiana is awarding a total of $832,677 in Community Impact Grants to 15 breast health programs in its 41-county service area. Hamilton Co. will benefit from funding provided to Little Red Door Cancer Agency and YWCA of Greater Lafayette during Komen Central Indiana’s 2016-2017 grant cycle, which began in April.

Historical Speaker Series – The Carmel Clay Historical Society presents its Speaker Series at 6:30 p.m. May 11 at the Museum of Miniature Houses, 111 E. Main St. Thomas Hamm will present Quakers and the Underground Railroad. Carmel lore suggests that passengers on the underground railroad traveled north along Williams Creek through Clay Township to the Quaker settlement of Poplar Ridge.

Pops concert – St. Marks United Methodist Church, 4780 E. 126th St., will hold a Spring Pops concert and pitch-in lunch at 12:15 p.m. on May 15. Civil War Roundtable – The Hamilton Co. Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. May 11 at Carmel City Hall. Retired attorney Chuck Beemer will speak on Lew Wallace and the Shiloh Controversy. The Battle of Shiloh itself will not be discussed in detail, but will form the backdrop for the controversy. The public is invited and admission is free.

Program for preteen girls – IU Health North will host Girlology – There’s Something New About You for girls in grades 4-5 from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 22. The program is designed to teach girls about puberty so they can face it with confidence and excitement. Cost is $20 per person and includes a goody bag for each girl. CPD hiring – The Carmel Police Dept. is accepting applications for the position of police officer. The Carmel Police Dept. offers a variety of assignments with the opportunity for advancement, including promotions and specialized positions. Percussion clinic – Students in grades 4 through 8 are invited to the Carmel High School Percussion Clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21 at the high school band room, entrance #29. Techniques on keyboard and drums will be taught and a parent performance will be held at 1 p.m. Cost is $30 and includes a t-shirt, pizza and snacks.
