As if Fishers ever seemed to slow down in its growth, another major statement on economic development was announced at Fishers City Hall on Nov. 10. IKEA, the Swedish-owned international home furnishing and retail store announced its plans to open a store in Fishers in 2017.

The building is expected to be approximately 296,000 square feet with 1000 parking spaces on 35 acres of land located off of the eastern side of Interstate 69 and South of E. 116th Street. Plans for development are estimated to begin in summer 2016 with a grand opening scheduled for fall 2017.

The economic development is expected to bring approximately 500 jobs during initial construction and add 250 new IKEA employees for the store. In addition to retail, the store will feature a 350-seat restaurant and children’s play area.

The store will mark the first and potentially only IKEA store in the state with the closest stores being in the Cincinnati area of West Chester, Ohio, Chicago area of Bolingbrook and IKEA Schaumburg.

The city will be approving the details of the development over the next several months.
