Her friends like to call Kayley Adams a water bug.

Small wonder, as the Zionsville Community High School senior loves being in the water, whether it’s swimming, scuba diving, kayaking or wakeboarding.

“(The water) is definitely my place to get away,” said Adams, 17, whose family has a home on Grandview Lake in Columbus, Ind.

That passion for the water recently landed Adams the Broadreach Community Choice Photographer Award. Her photo of a rainbow stretching across the Caribbean Sea received the most Facebook votes and will be featured in the 2015 Broadreach Calendar.

Adams captured the shot during a 12-day trip to the Caribbean to study marine biology through Broadreach, which organizes summer adventure and study abroad programs for students. Her parents surprised her with the trip to help her decide if a career in marine biology is something she wants to pursue.

“It definitely confirms my passion for it,” said Adams, who plans to major in marine biology at Indiana University.

The win capped a memorable experience for Adams.

“With all the trips and all the students that would be posting things, I didn’t think mine would reach the top,” Adams said. “But with the support of my school and community, people just passed it along.”

Photography is more of a hobby than a love, Adams said.

“I don’t plan to pursue it as a career at this point, but I definitely have a camera everywhere I go,” she said. “It’s my way of capturing my best memories in life.”
