Poet Laureate to visit Zionsville

Poetry on Brick Street will present former Virginia Poet Laureate, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda as its guest poet at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 6, at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center in Zionsville. The event is free and open to the public. An open mic will follow Kreiter-Foronda’s reading.

Kreiter-Foronda served as Virginia’s Poet Laureate from 2006 to 2008. She is also a painter, sculptor and educator. In 1969, she graduated from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington) with a degree in English. She holds two Masters degrees and a Ph.D. from George Mason University, where she received the first doctorate presented by the school.

Kreiter-Foronda has published six books: “Contrary Visions,” “Gathering Light,” “Death Comes Riding,” “Greatest Hits, River Country, and The Embrace: Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.” In addition, she is co-editor of “In a Certain Place, an anthology,” and “Four Virginia Poets Laureate: A Teaching Guide.”

Her poetry honors include six Pushcart Prize nominations, an Edgar Allan Poe first place award, three Artist-in-Education grants and an Arts-on-the-Road grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. In 1992, Kreiter-Foronda was named a Virginia Cultural Laureate for her contributions to American Literature.

Reproductions of her paintings and sculpture adorn the covers and pages of her books. Currently, she lives in Hardyville, Va., with her husband, Patricio.
