Troop 722D (comprised of Scouts and leaders from Troops 101 in Noblesville and 131 in Carmel) just returned from a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. The seven boys and four leader hiked greater than 80 miles in 12 days over rough terrain of the New Mexico back country. They carried all the equipment, water and food in their packs stopping once mid-trek to restock on food. Trek highlights included summiting the “Tooth of Time” and “Trail Peak” mountains. On Trail Peak they were able to observe the wreckage of a B-24 Liberator bomber in the early 1940s and pay respects to the crew. John Onhemus of Wells-Fargo was able to climb the Tooth of Time with son Evan completing a years-long dream of summiting the peak. Dr. William Spanenberg (St. Vincent Hospital) and Mrs. Layla Spanenberg (Carmel Clay School Board) were likewise able to summit with son Alexander.
The boys and leaders of 722D departed Galesburg, Illinois on July 21 on the Amtrak Southwest Chief arriving in Raton, New Mexico on July 22. In Cimarron, they experienced temperature in to the 90s before departing for the mountains where they experienced torrential rain, temperatures into the 30s, lightning and sleet. The returned to base camp on Aug. 2 and departed from Raton on Aug. 3returning to Carmel on Aug. 4.
