The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced today the PBS special “Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Project” is an Emmy award nominee for Outstanding Music Direction. The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards will be awarded on September 23.

The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts was the backdrop for the PBS concert featuring Michael Feinstein. The concert hall is featured throughout the television production. Feinstein, the Center’s artistic director, headlined the performance. Bill Elliott was the music director for the special with film crews from Bounce, an AEG Company, capturing the May 12, 2011 concert. The event included a live audience from Central Indiana.

“This is extraordinary news. The Center’s first-ever television program received an Emmy nomination – that is an accomplishment beyond our wildest dreams,” said Frank Basile, Interim President and CEO of the Center for the Performing Arts. “Michael Feinstein is very talented. The nomination is a great honor for him and the Center. We will continue to encourage opportunities that will bring the world to Central Indiana, whether that’s live and in-person or directly into people’s living rooms, as this special accomplished.”

“Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Project” focused on the Sinatra Circle: performers, songs and the era in which Frank Sinatra reigned supreme.  Backed by a 17-piece band, Feinstein led a musical exploration into how Sinatra influenced Rosemary Clooney, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald.  Feinstein, named as the Center’s Artistic Director in 2009, is a five-time Grammy nominee. The concert aired as pledge-drive programming on PBS member stations around the country in 2011, including WFYI in Indianapolis.

In addition to “Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Project,” other nominees in the Outstanding Music Direction category include: “Christmas In Washington,” “Country Music (In Performance At The White House),” “The Kennedy Center Honors,” “Seth MacFarlane: Swingin’ In Concert,” and “The Thomashefskys: Music And Memories Of A Life In The Yiddish Theater (Great Performances).”
