Toy store events – Earth Explorer Toys has several upcoming events including a free Shopkins swap from 1 to 2 p.m. July 9, and a doll extravaganza from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on July 16. Cost is $10 per girl. Bring any American Girl or other 18-inch doll to participate in hair care and braiding, doll ear piercing, craft, and doll fashion show.
College news – Robert Berrios graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. Wheaton College named Sarah Denne and Ellen Gibson to the dean’s list. Emily Sum graduated from the University of the Sciences.
Youth council needs applicants – Whitestown leaders have formed the Whitestown Youth Council. The council will hold meetings, make motions and create and vote on resolutions and ordinances, just as their senior counterparts do. They will advise the elected Town Council members about suggested changes concerning issues important to their generation and the Whitestown community. Youth in grades 9-12 are being sought. Poetry reading – Black Dog Books, 115 S. Main St., presents a reading of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” on July 2. The reading will be done by Elinor Williams, great, great granddaughter of the author of the poem, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Williams will read the poem every half hour beginning at 10 a.m. with the last reading at 11:30 a.m.
Backpack Attack begins – A community-wide school supply drive will run through July 12. More than 30 community partners will collect supplies, including businesses, service organizations, churches and others. The school supplies will be distributed at the Boone County Backpack Attack Festival from 9 to 11 a.m. July 30 to Boone County students. To donate supplies, look for drop boxes in the libraries, WalMart, Akard’s and many other businesses in the area.
Surf Shack VBS – Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. Ninth St., will hold Surf Shack VBS for kids ages 3 though fifth grade from 9 a.m. to noon July 11-15. Register online at ZionsvilleChristian.org or by calling 317-873-5301.
Food & Flicks – Traders Point presents Food & Flicks on the Field every other Friday through July 29. Food trucks will open at 8 p.m. and the movies will begin at dusk in front of the Academy building at Traders Point Christian School, 6600 S. Indianapolis Rd., Whitestown. Movie lineup includes: “Elf” – July 1; “Zootopia” – July 15; “Big Hero 6” – July 29.

Nature Center news – The Zion Nature’s summer hours are noon to 5 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Join us from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 16 for World Snake Day. Polo charity match – The 13th Annual Boone County Polo Charity will be held July 9 at the Hickory Hall Polo Club, 7551 E. 100 N., Whitestown. Gates will open at 11 a.m. and the match begins at 1 p.m. Proceeds from the annual fundraiser benefit Boone County Senior Services, Inc.
