Flix Brewhouse to reopen four days per week

Dinner at the movies has finally returned.

Flix Brewhouse will reopen Nov. 5 at Merchants’ Square in Carmel with a high-tech air purification system and other enhanced safety protocols, Flix Brewhouse Chief Operating Officer Matthew Baizer said. Flix will be open Thursday through Sunday.

“After some exhaustive research on air purification options, we settled many months ago on bipolar ionization,” Baizer said. “There wasn’t a supplier problem since we were one of the first businesses to commit to the investment in this solution. The delay was a result of other factors related to the motion picture exhibition industry. In order to have a meaningful reopening, we needed to feel good about the release schedule. While the first-run theatrical release calendar still remains in a constant state of flux, we believe we have some compelling program offerings we’ve put together for the residents of Carmel and the greater Indianapolis area to entice them to come back to Flix in a safe manner.”

Flix, which features its craft beers from its microbrewery, is a charter member of the CinemaSafe alliance, developed by leading epidemiologists in conjunction with the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Baizer said tough negotiations had to be ironed out with the landlord before reopening.

“Bottom line is that due to the pandemic, the entire cinema exhibition space has now changed, which has altered the fundamental economics of being a successful, long-term movie theater operator,” Baizer said. “We needed to get that right with Merchants’ Square in order to secure a long-term future.”

Being open on weekends makes the most sense now, Baizer said.

“The reality is that the economics work better when we can maximize people seeing movies,” Baizer said. “Pre-pandemic, the weekends generally paid for the weekdays, but now that we have social-distanced seating, capacity limits and less first-run nationally released and marketed content, we need to limit our operating hours to cut costs. We limit ourselves to a maximum 50 percent capacity in an auditorium, but the reality is that it’s less than that because we leave two seats on either side of each party that purchases seats so we ensure proper social distancing.”

All nine screens will be open. Flix has a new mobile app where guests can browse seat maps, access their loyalty account and order food.

“We’re excited to bring some beloved throwback films throughout the month of November, including movies like ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ ‘The Karate Kid’ and special showings of ‘Bridesmaids’ that will feature half-price select wine bottles and a complimentary glass of sparkling wine for every guest of age,” Flix Senior Mark Manager Summer Hasan said. “We’ll also have a “Pulp Fiction’ Flix FanFest that will include a special-themed menu and a custom pint glass with admission.”
