The recent unrest caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and protests against police brutality and racial injustice led Victor Schleich to want to do more to help his community. So, with a longtime interest in politics, he launched his first campaign for elected office as a post-primary addition to the Democratic ticket for the Hamilton County Council race.

The Carmel resident is among a field of five candidates seeking three at-large seats on the council, which is responsible for managing the county’s finances. Other candidates in the Nov. 3 election are Democrat Gardiner Bink and Republicans Sue Maki, Steve Nation and incumbent Brad Beaver.

“A lot of people feel there needs to be new blood and a new voice in the county, especially when we’re approaching what will probably be a rough year financially with the effects of COVID and the shutdowns. (I want) to ensure that the budget is done in a way that’s fair to everyone,” said Schleich, a 2012 Carmel High School graduate.

Schleich said other key campaign issues include improving the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, in part by making more mental health resources available to residents that need them; ensuring infrastructure work is environmentally-friendly and that unionized workforces are considered to build them; and implementing green energy policies.

“With the effects of climate change, I think Hamilton County needs to do more to mitigate our own effects on the environment and prepare for other climate-related emergencies that might come our way,” he said.

Schleich said if elected he will consider the needs of residents from all parts of the county when making decisions.

“I am here to fight for everyone in the county, not just those in the big cities and not just those in rural areas,” He said. “I’m trying to make life more fair, more just and more equitable for all citizens of Hamilton County.”

Schleich teaches U.S. history and economics at North Central High School and is a coach with Carmel Swim Club. He is married to Alicia Deogracias-Schleich, who also graduated from CHS.
