Carmel High School dominant team of decade in 4A

For all of Carmel High School’s wealth of state titles, it had only one boys state basketball title (1977) to its credit prior to coach Scott Heady’s arrival in 2010-11.

Since then, the Greyhounds have won three Class 4A state championships, two under Heady in 2012 and 2013 and March 23 under his successor, Ryan Osborn. It’s certainly the team of the decade in Class 4A as no other team won more than one title. CHS also reached the state title game before losing to Warren Central in 2018.

Osborn, who was Heady’s assistant for six seasons, became head coach in 2017-18 when Heady took the Marian University job.

“It’s been special,” said Osborn, whose team beat Ben Davis 60-55 in the state final. “I feel like we’ve built over the last eight years an identity that the kids really buy into. For a lot of these guys, this opportunity to play for Carmel High School is something they’ve been looking into since their young days, playing with the (Carmel) Pups program.”

Five seniors, including four starters, helped guide the Greyhounds to a 26-1 mark this season. Osborn said those seniors likely were influenced by watching older players such as Sam Curts, Michael Volovic, Ben Gardner, Ryan Cline and Zach McRoberts contribute to those two state titles.

“They were in fifth and sixth grade, and I think at that age, it has a big impact on you,” Osborn said. “Then, when you get into high school, it’s pretty vivid and something you want to strive for. They’re a really unselfish group and really fun to coach.”

Osborn said the group doesn’t play for statistics.

“They don’t play for shots,” he said. “They don’t play for points. The play for each other. It’s not like we’ve been loaded with Division I talent.”

However, the team has been stocked with players with high basketball IQs, he said.

Osborn said while the championships are great, it’s the development he enjoys watching.

“It’s great to see them realize their dream,” Osborn said.
