Carmel police remind Monon users to use caution during busy summer months

Warm weather in the spring and summer leads to peak usage of the Monon Greenway, but it’s also a time accidents are more likely to occur.

“We encourage those on the Monon to pay attention and use extreme caution, especially in highly populated areas,” Carmel Police Dept. officer Donald Schoeff said.

Although uncommon, he said increased traffic has led to accidents involving vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, especially at intersections, such as in April when an Indianapolis girl was struck by an SUV while riding her bicycle at the 111th Street crossing. Schoeff encourages Monon users to pay attention to speed limits and other signs on the trail.

“They are in place to prevent accidents and injuries, so it’s important to pay attention to them and our surroundings,” he said.

Schoeff said he often sees runners and bikers immediately cross streets, expecting cars to stop for them. Vehicles, however, have the right of way.

As a result, Monon users must stop at intersections. But Schoeff also recommends that drivers slow down when approaching the intersections.

Accidents aren’t the only potential danger on the Monon. Although crime is limited, Schoeff said there have been instances on the Monon in the past, such as robberies and theft, especially during the summer.

In response, CPD increases its presence on the Monon during the summer. But it can only do so much.

“It is important for people to be aware of their surroundings and remove themselves from areas that might seem unsafe,” Schoeff said.

Schoeff also encourages people to report anything suspicious. If a crime or accident occurs, he said onlookers should call 911 and provide what information they can, including the closest intersection and directions.

Schoeff said there are rules in place for a reason—to keep people safe on the Monon. But that doesn’t mean using the Monon can’t still be a fun way to get outside.

“Following the rules in place on the Monon can provide a safe and enjoyable experience to our citizens and visitors,” he said.
