A small group of students at Carmel High School looking to go into health science related fields after college recently started a local Health Occupations Students of America Chapter. Six of its members qualified for the international competition June 21 to 24 in Orlando in the club’s inaugural year.

The group took 11 members to the State Leadership conference in April.

“The conference allows HOSA chapters to not only socialize with one another, but an environment where they can compete with each other in all of the 60 events that are offered,” co-president and CHS junior Bethlehem Daniel said. “There is really an event for everyone, depending on what you’re looking at within the science field.”

Eleven students competed in six events, with 10 out of 11 placing in the top 10 at state and six students placing in the top three, which qualified them for the international conference.

“As a team, we have decided that we will not be attending the international conference this year but look forward toward planning and preparing for the next year of our chapter,” Daniel said.

HOSA’s mission is to promote career opportunities within the health care industry and to enhance the quality of health care delivered to all people. The group has approximately 30 members.

“We decided to start the Carmel HOSA chapter here at the high school because we felt there was a lack of a chapter that would give us that competitive environment,” Daniel said.

Daniel wants to become a radiologist in the future. Her co-president, CHS junior Julianna Kessilyas, hopes to become a doctor. Vice president and CHS junior Allison Li also hopes to become a doctor.
