Local scout on Capitol Hill – Eight Girl Scouts from around the nation, including Kamna Gupta of Carmel, recently had the opportunity to exhibit their Gold Award projects and talk to leaders on Capitol Hill about important issues impacting the world at a celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of the highest award in Girl Scouts. Gupta’s project, Soles for Souls, provided more than 2,250 pounds of shoes to underprivileged people living in 20 different countries.
Fit-Friendly businesses named – The American Heart Association today recognized 48 Indiana companies and organizations as Fit-Friendly Worksites for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace during its Spring 2016 application cycle. Carmel-based CNO Financial Group and RCI were among those included in the honor.
Parkinson’s support group – The Climb, which is an exercise program of the Indiana Parkinson Foundation, holds a monthly support group to provide information on various topics for those with Parkinson’s or Parkinsonism’s as well as their caregivers/families/friends. Barrington charity walk – Residents of The Barrington of Carmel retirement community recently held a charity walk to raise funds to promote senior health. Senior residents, staff and family members walked for 24 hours straight and raised over $11,000 during the community’s second annual 24-hour Memorial Walk.
Fill the Bus volunteers needed – A county-wide school supply drive, Backpack Attack, is running through July 20. On July 16 and 17, Backpack Attack will be hosting Fill the Bus events at Walmart stores across Hamilton County. Shoppers will be asked to purchase school supply bundles from Walmart and fill the bus with the donations. Mayors oppose fracking – Following the recent United States Conference of Mayors, over 30 mayors from more than a dozen states issued a statement urging state and federal leaders to uphold local control of drilling. In the statement, the mayors opposed moves by both state and federal officials limiting the ability of communities to protect themselves from the harms of industrial fracking. Carmel Mayor James Brainard was one of the mayors who signed the statement.

Guild authors to be named – Excitement has been building for the 12th annual Guild Book & Author events hosted by the Guild of the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation. Cinch Cycling at Rollfast – Pro cyclist Tom Danielson will attend the Rollfast Gran Fondo in Carmel on Sept. 18. Danielson has started a new business called Cinch Cycling and focuses on training camps, clinics and coaching. Danielson will bring the Cinch Cycling experience to Carmel. Backpack giveaway – TCC, the largest Verizon Authorized Retailer in the U.S., and A Wireless are teaming up to donate 235,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through TCC’s annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Between noon and 3 p.m. July 30, local families are invited to visit TCC at 1532 S. Range Line Rd. to pick up a backpack filled with school supplies. One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Grief support workshops – St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 126th Street and Gray Road, will hold GriefShare from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from Aug. 4 through Oct. 27. This non-denominational DVD series features grief experts and real-life stories of people, followed by a small group discussion about what was seen on the DVD. Cost is $15. Stewards of Children – Parents and adults who work with children can learn how to prevent child sexual abuse by registering for Stewards of Children. This program teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react to child sexual abuse.
