Bone marrow and blood drive – Zionsville Presbyterian Church, 4775 W. 116th St., will host a bone marrow and blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 22. Local students win Fulbright – Megan O’Connell has been awarded a Fulbright Grant for the 2016-2017 academic year. O’Connell will travel to Peru for the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program. In addition, Emily Tatum has received a Fulbright Summer Institute placement to study in Wales for six weeks during the summer.
Carmel resident wins pageant – Carmel resident Lea Transfield was recently crowned Pure International Pageant’s Classy Ms. Indiana 2016. She competed in modeling, personal introduction, and personal interview at the Indiana State pageant. Pure International is a Christian-based pageant program for men and women of all ages. Junior police academy – The Hamilton Co. Junior Law Enforcement Academy is accepting applications. The academy is a one-day program for kids who might be interested in law enforcement. Students will spend the day learning about emergency response, taking a ride in a police car and more. The academy will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 17 at the Hamilton Co. 4-H Fairgrounds. State tree planted – The Hamilton Co. Leadership Academy commemorated their 25th anniversary by planting the Indiana state tree, a Tulip Poplar. Members of the HCLA board of directors planted the tree at MacGregor Park on Earth Day.
Sustainable Living Seminar – The Carmel Green Initiative presents Water … Connecting the Drops from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 18 at the Carmel Clay Public Library. Find out where our drinking water comes from and what we can do to protect it. Learn about the state of our ground water and its impact on economic development. Program for preteen girls – IU Health North will host “Girlology – There’s Something New About You” for girls in grades 4-5 from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 22. Indy 500 volunteers needed – The 100th Running of the Indy 500 Host Committee is looking for volunteers for the upcoming events. College news – David Kowalik was named to the dean’s list at DePaul University. Lauren Godden of DePauw University was named Player of the Year in the NCAC conference for softball.
IMCU donates to schools – Indiana Members Credit Union has donated a combined $17,375 to 10 area schools for the 2015-2016 school year through its debit card give-back program. IMCU members can received a debit card associated with a school and when they use that card, the school benefits. Local schools that received funds include Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield and Noblesville.
Endurance race registration – Registration is open for the second annual 8-Hour Dream Endurance Race to be held at noon on July 23 at Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse. Shredding event – Comprehensive Retirement Solutions will hold a free shredding event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 4 at 11595 N. Meridian St., Carmel. This is a drive through event. ProShred Security will destroy confidential documents in their mobile shredding truck on site while you watch from your car. The first 200 customers will receive a free goodie bag.
Church rummage sale – St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 126th Street and Gray Road, will hold its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 27 and from 8 a.m. to noon on May 28. Donations of gently used furniture, games, toys, baby items, household items and knick-knacks are needed. Items can be dropped off at the church from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 23-26. No Christmas items or clothing, please.

Click It or Ticket – During May, local law enforcement will participate in the annual Click It or Ticket campaign to encourage drivers and passengers to buckle up. Percussion clinic – Students in grades 4 through 8 are invited to the Carmel High School Percussion Clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21 at the high school band room, entrance #29.
