Zionsville health coach Dawn Parker releases chocolate cookbook

By Joseph Knoop

Let’s face it, we’re all wondering how much of our favorite treats we can eat without risking our diets. Author Dawn Parker of Zionsville may have the answer with her new book “The Healthy Chocoholic.”

Parker, a certified health coach, took her experience helping people adjust to different food regimens and put it into a collection of recipes that feature the sweet taste of chocolate with none of the commonly associated additives.

When Parker’s son was diagnosed with celiac disease (a condition that necessitates total absence of gluten in one’s diet), she found herself drawn to addressing food intolerances for her clients.

“Working with clients that have a gluten or dairy intolerance, I started to work on these recipes that helped them still have enjoyable food but feel better and not engage their intolerances,” Parker said. “I really want to help people prevent and treat more naturally as opposed to taking a drug for symptoms.”

“The Healthy Chocoholic” includes recipes for smoothies, no-bake treats, candy, cookies, and more. In total, the book has more than 60 recipes.

Parker, herself new to authoring, took nine months to create the book, but said the recipes come from her own work.

“Once I had my recipes perfected and had people do taste tests, I had to learn how to self-publish,” Parker said. “I love creating recipes, and I’m comfortable with all of the ingredients in the book, so getting the writing of the recipes perfect was the most challenging part.”

Parker will hold several events related to the book, including a healthy chocolate lecture and book signing on Dec. 3 at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library. The book is available at local retailers including Black Dog Books, Allure Salon, Love Your Body Boutique and Brain Balance as well as Amazon.com. For more information, visit dawnjparker.com.
