Opinion: Bring some pasta, help set a record

Last year, the annual Pasta Bowl, which seeks to send as much pasta to Central Indiana food pantries as is possible, hauled in 7,825 pounds. This year, the goal is 20,000 pounds. Will you do your part? The drive will experience its apex at the Sept. 11 Fishers-Hamilton Southeastern football game. You needn’t wait until then to donate, as bins are either set or will be set by Sept. 8 at Meijer stores, HSE buildings, fire stations in the city, the Fishers YMCA and the offices of the Fall Creek and Delaware townships trustees.

Thumbs up to Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson, who last week said he and some fellow party members are “very interested in putting together mechanisms that allow people to climb out of dependency and to become strong parts of the fabric of America.” Wouldn’t that be something?

Once Vice President Joe Biden declares his intention to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency, all you-know-what is going to break loose in Iowa, where Hillary Rodman Clinton has a commanding lead, according to recent polling, and in New Hampshire. That race could reduce Republican hopeful Donald Trump to a sideshow, which many believe he already has become. This also might become President Barack Obama’s chance to be a kingmaker and keep himself in the conversation. And remember, he’s not exactly turning cartwheels over Clinton’s race for the Oval Office.
