As the Hamilton County Leadership Academy approaches its 25th anniversary in 2016, Current is highlighting local leaders who have helped build and sustain the program, which focuses on strengthening our community by developing informed leaders. In June, another class of engaged citizens will join the 600-plus graduates already working to make a difference.

Douglas D. Church, HCLA founding member, current and former curriculum dean

Hometown: Born in Indianapolis; grew up in Anderson and Muncie

Lives and works: Noblesville

Family: Wife Kathy; daughter Julia and son-in-law Jeff Kozicki, who have two sons, JD and Josh; son Jay and daughter-in-law Hillary, who have two children, Zeb and Franny.

Career: Senior partner at prominent Noblesville law firm Church, Church, Hittle and Antrim; Fishers town/city attorney; general counsel, United States Masters Swimming, Inc.

Community involvement (current): HCLA curriculum dean, Class of 2016; Conner Prairie Foundation, Inc., secretary; Conner Prairie Museum, Inc., secretary; William Conner Society member; Greater Indianapolis YMCA Advisory Board; Hamilton County Progress Committee; The Friends of Central Pool, Inc., president; United States Masters Swimming Endowment Fund, chairman.

Nice to know: Church coaches the Noblesville adult swim team. In 2004, he placed among the top 10 master swimmers nationally in the 400-meter individual medley, 200-meter backstroke, and 1,650-meter freestyle.

Biggest HCLA takeaway: “There is far more to know about our county than most people will ever begin to know.”

How has HCLA changed your perspective on community leadership? “It makes the clear point that one must see beyond the end of his/her street and understand the dynamics that make the whole county work.”

Favorite Hamilton County restaurant, park, venue, or attraction: “I can’t imagine life without The Hamilton Restaurant, Conner Prairie and the Forest Park Aquatic Center.”
