Carmel hires six firefighters

Last week, the Carmel Fire Department hired six new firefighters. They will be filling the positions created by recent and upcoming retirements in the department. The firefighters will be sent through six to eight months of Emergency Medical Technician training and Fire School before they are released to work the department’s 24-hour shifts.

Justin Rutherford

Justin is from Pittsboro and he and his wife Katie have recently moved to Boone County. He has worked for the Pittsboro Fire Department as a firefighter for the last eight years. Justin attended Ball State University where he obtained his Bachelor of General Studies. Justin coaches football at Tri-West High School and he and his wife run a nonprofit animal rescue. Justin and Katie are expecting their first child in June.

Kent Anderson

Kent is from Anderson and has worked with the Chesterfield Union Township Fire Department for the last six years. Kent attended Vincennes University, earning his Associates in Applied Science (AAS) in Fire Science in 2010 and has recently become a SCUBA diver.

 Grant Russel

Grant is from Indianapolis and has been working with Wayne Township Fire Department in Indianapolis as an Emergency Medical Technician for the last year and half. Grant holds an Associate Degree in Applied Science (AAS) in Fire Science from Ivy Tech Community College. Grant and his wife Lauren are active in youth ministries at their church.

 Michael Phillips

Michael is from Avon, and has worked as an assistant manager at Mike’s Car Wash. Michael attended Indiana University and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Certificate in Personal Training. Michael is engaged to his fiancée Julie, and they plan to be married in June of 2015.

 William Mueller

William is from Westfield and for the last year has been working as a firefighter with Portage Fire Department in Indiana. William is attending IUPUI and pursuing a degree in Public Safety. While in high school, William was a part of the Carmel Fire Department Explorer program.

 Jonathan Benge

Jonathan is from Plainfield and has been enlisted as an active member of the United States Navy. Jonathan was deployed in Afghanistan from 2010-2011 where he served as a medic for security convoy. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from American Military University in Business Management and has been working for the Veterans Administration Hospital in admittance. Jonathan and his wife Stacy are expecting their first child in June.
