Westfield residents Lucie Mays-Sulewski and Kim Weiss have become regular training partners. So it seemed only fitting the friends finished 1-2 in the women’s portion of the Carmel Marathon on April 18.

Mays-Sulewski, 44, won in two hours, 55 minutes and 37 seconds, earning $750 for the victory.

“It was a little hot,” Mays-Sulewski said. “I was hoping it would be a little faster but the course has a lot of turns. It’s pretty hilly. It’s a tough course.”

Weiss, 36, placed second in 3:01.07. The duo have been training together for about four years.

“We’re very good friends so it’s nice to train together, work hard together and race together,” Mays-Sulewski said.

Weiss and Mays-Sulewski plan to run in the Boston Marathon in 2016. Both met the standard for their age group in the Carmel Marathon.

“You are always happy when you can start training for a race and cross the finish line, because so many things can happen,” Mays-Sulewski said.

Weiss agreed.

“It’s just such a blessing to stay healthy,” Weiss said. “To be able to cross the finish line is awesome especially as I get older.”

Mays-Sulewski, who has been running for 34 years and is from the southern part of Illinois, has lived in the Indianapolis area for 20 years. She was a distance runner at University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Weiss, a Chicago native who has lived in Westfield for 12 years, was a distance runner at Western Michigan.

Jesse Davis captured his fourth consecutive Carmel Marathon men’s title. The Broad Ripple resident won in two hours, 25 minutes and 26 seconds. Davis, 33, won the half-marathon in the inaugural Carmel Marathon in 2011.

“Originally I thought I would go out for my course record pace, which was 2:21:46 (set last year),” Davis said. “I was on pace through halfway through the race. Then it started heating up so I just tried to cruise to get the win.”

Davis won by a comfortable margin over second-place finisher, Aaron Kremer, Washington, D.C., who finished in 2:39:13.
