Westfield High School senior and Girl Scout Ambassador Marissa Barrows, 17, is creating a butterfly garden at the Westfield Playhouse, 1836 Ind. 32 West, with the help of local volunteers. The garden is Barrow’s Gold Award Project for the Girl Scouts (the equivalent of the rank of Eagle Scout).

Barrows said she is going to recruit a younger Girl Scout Troop to assist in maintaining the butterfly garden. She is creating this to help beautify Westfield, the Westfield Playhouse, and to give butterflies a place to propagate. Barrows said she hopes this will in some small way help prevent the extinction of some butterflies.

Barrows is planting the garden at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 and is looking for volunteers and/or donations. Those interested in assisting may contact her at [email protected]. Barrows’ project is relying on her family and friends, and members of Girl Scout Troop 1462. The Hamilton County Master Gardeners have volunteered Patty Morrow’s assistance and donated plants for the garden.

Barrows said she selected the Westfield Playhouse in part because of her love of theater and because she is a member of Main Street Productions, which performs at the theater. She has appeared in many productions and assisted as a member of the technical crew. Barrows plans to attend college after graduating from WHS and wants to become a teacher.
