HiLite newsmagazine, the Carmel high school publication, has been named a Pacemaker Finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association. The Pacemaker is the NSPA’s highest award for a journalism staff and is often called the “Pulitzer Prize of scholastic journalism.”

The Pacemaker is broken down by style/size of publication, and the HiLite is one of only 16 publications in the nation recognized in the Newspaper Tabloid (17+ pages) category. According to the NSPA, the Pacemaker recognizes excellence in several categories, including coverage and content, quality of writing, leadership on the opinion page(s), evidence of in-depth reporting, layout and design, and photography, art and graphics.

This is the fourth consecutive year the HiLite has been named a Pacemaker Finalist, earning the Pacemaker Award in 2012. Winners of this year’s Pacemaker, selected from the list of finalists, will be announced at the JEA/NSPA National Convention in Washington D.C. on Nov. 8.
