A United Way of Central Indiana program to help kids improve their reading skills is returning to Boone County this fall. More than 70 volunteers will be needed when the program gets underway at Hattie B. Stokes and Harney Elementary Schools in Lebanon.
A 90-minute mandatory training is provided for tutors. A training will be held on August 26 in Lebanon at Trinity Lutheran Church. Additional trainings are also available in Marion and Hamilton counties. Volunteers must also pass a criminal history check.
ReadUP tutoring is part of United Way’s education priority that focuses on early childhood development and elementary education. During each session, the student reads from a selected book while the tutor assists and asks questions designed to improve comprehension and build confidence.
“We have had a great response from the community, but are still in need of additional tutors,” said Amy Hammerle, Boone County Volunteer Engagement Coordinator. Tutors are currently needed on Thursdays at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.and on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Harney Elementary from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. ReadUP gets underway in mid-September.
