Opinion: Lions will help you salute the 4th

The approaching Fourth of July holiday is noteworthy in Zionsville for two reasons. First, the obvious: It’s a celebration of our nation’s independence and, in general, freedom. Second, and you may not know this, the Zionsville Lions Club raises the second-most amount of funding from the annual All-American July 4th Celebration in Lions Park. We urge you to attend. Food, music and fun begin in the park at 5 p.m. and are followed by the fireworks at dusk. Parking in Lions Park is a $5 donation, which you should do because it’s the right thing to do. (If it rains, the Lions will give it a go on July 5.) It’s certain to be an outstanding event from the organization that, among other things, encourages service-minded people to assist the community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.

Please note: Indiana Code allows for consumer fireworks to be used only on the user’s property; or on the property of someone who has consented to the use of fireworks; or at a special discharge location. Fireworks may be purchased only by persons 18 years of age or older and children may possess or use any kind of firework only when an adult is present. Fireworks on the Fourth of July may be discharged legally only between 9 a.m. and midnight. Don’t tempt a record, folks. Penalties for violating the fireworks law can range from a Class A misdemeanor up to a Class C felony in the case of the reckless or intentional use of fireworks that results in a person’s death. For more information, visit http://www.in.gov and query fireworks.
