The Boone County Sheriff’s Merit Board met in executive session last week to discuss several personnel issues.  Among those issues was the subject of sheriff Ken Campbell’s announcement of early retirement at a department-wide meeting on June 19.

“While it is our understanding that the Merit Board has no responsibility for, or control over, the sheriff or his conduct, we are saddened and disappointed by the actions that lead to the early retirement of Sheriff Campbell,” said Sheriff’s Merit Board president Doug Taylor.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Merit Board is comprised of three Republicans and two Democrats. The merit deputies elect a member from each party, and the sheriff appoints the remainder. According to Taylor, the Sheriff’s Merit Board responsibilities are to manage the investments of the employee pension fund, and to provide a fair public hearing of Merit Board officers with regards to hiring, dismissal, promotion and demotion and/or discipline.

Campbell resigned as Boone County sheriff amidst allegations of misconduct with a prostitute over the last three to four years. According to a public statement from the prostitute, whose name is not being released, Campbell did not pay for sexual services but did engage in an extra-marital affair with her.

“Our concern centers on the health and well-being of the people of the department. We believe Major Nielsen, with the support of his staff, is uniquely qualified to assume command as acting sheriff for the remainder of Ken Campbell’s term.”
