The Humane Society for Hamilton County (HSHC) has partnered with the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic, Inc., Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation and Pet Pals TV for Pit Bull Education Month. During the month of March, the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic will be offering discounted spays and neuters of all bully breed dogs and HSHC will be focusing on education regarding the American Pit Bull Terrier’s history, characteristics and role in society today.

A family-friendly day of events to educate, dispel myths and celebrate the American Pit Bull Terrier is scheduled for Saturday, March 30th, 2013, at the Monon Community Center in Carmel. The event will begin with the annual “Parade-A-Bull” Parade along the Monon Trail at 12:00 Noon (registration begins at 11:30 a.m.) The parade Grand Marshal will be Gremlin, a former fighting dog who suffered horrific injuries before being rescued. She is now a certified therapy dog and inspiration for a National Reading Program called Thera-Pits. Gremlin travels the country with her owner and founder of Rowdy to the Rescue, Chris Hughes, spreading the word about dog fighting and how bully breed dogs are making a positive difference in our communities.

“Pit bulls and bully breed-type dogs represent the largest portion of dogs entering, and dying, in U.S. shelters,” said executive director Rebecca Stevens. “We are committed to educating the community about the history of the American Pit Bull Terrier who has been a part of American culture for almost 200 years, not to mention a well-respected breed due to his strength, loyalty intelligence and love of people. Our goal is to not only provide facts and figures that will dispel many of the myths about this horribly misunderstood breed, but to also encourage responsible dog ownership regardless of breed,” says Stevens.

Bully breed owners – as well as owners of all dog breeds – are welcome and encouraged to bring their well-behaved, leashed pets out to walk in the parade. Registration begins at
