Legislation authored by State Sens. Pat Miller (R-Indianapolis) and Luke Kenley (R-Noblesville) to provide Hoosiers with greater flexibility when paying property taxes passed the Senate on Feb. 14 by a 48-0 vote.

Senate Bill 275 makes it possible for Indiana homeowners to pay their property taxes in monthly installments rather than as a lump sum, if they choose to do so.

“Several residents in our community came to me this summer expressing concerns that they could not pay their property taxes in full but would benefit from a monthly payment plan,” Miller said. “This bill is a common-sense fix in support of taxpayers. My goal is to help Indiana homeowners keep their property and avoid having it placed in a tax sale.”

Currently, counties have the option to set up a monthly payment system for residents, but only some counties have exercised that option.

“This legislation would make sure all Hoosier homeowners are afforded the advantage of a payment system that best fits their budget needs,” Kenley said.

The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Its sponsor is State Rep. Randy Truitt (R-West Lafayette).
