Student athletes across Indiana participate in the Indiana High School Athletic Association, but one of its leaders lives right here in Fishers.
Ally Stein, a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, is the president of the IHSAA’s Student Advisory Committee, an 18-student group.
The students are from various schools around the state and represent athletes, give opinions on issues and hold meetings and a conference, Stein said.
As a new initiative this year, the students chose to work on a service project with Special Olympics Indiana. The student-athletes have worked to raise money and awareness of Special Olympics Indiana’s various activities, Stein said.
In collaboration with a Fishers High School senior and others, Stein has overseen $900 raised locally for the cause. It takes $1,200 to send an athlete to participate in the games.
Stein runs track and field and also is a cheerleader at HSE. She plans to attend Purdue University after graduating.
To be part of the Student Advisory Committee, a candidate must be recommended by a principal or athletic director and then serves in his or her junior and senior year, according to Stein.
