Summer Stock Stage, a nonprofit summer theater program for performers ages 13 to 19 in the Indianapolis area, will present “The King and I” at 7:30 p.m. July 24 through 26 and 2:30 p.m. July 27 at Ayres Auditorium at Park Tudor School, 7200 N. College Ave., Indianapolis. This family-friendly classic marks the last of the group’s summer musical productions with all ticket proceeds going directly toward the program.
More than 40 of the most talented students from public, private and charter schools from throughout Central Indiana have spent months rehearsing with director Emily Ristine Holloway, music director Jeanne Bowling and choreographer Cherri Jaffee. The cast includes eight actors from Hamilton County. In addition to the teenage performers, 22 elementary-age students will act as the King’s many children.
“The King and I” is a unique love story featuring Anna, a British governess hired to tutor the royal children, and the stubborn King of Siam. While stuck in their separate cultural ways, the two eventually come to understand, respect and love one another. The Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical features the hit songs “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” and “Shall We Dance.”
