ER physician Dr. Marcus Hendry was in charge of St. Vincent Hospital’s Dec. 8 “Be An Ice-Breaker” project, which provides free ice-melting salt to the public. Volunteers, including members of the Zionsville Lions Club and the Zionsville Alpha Leo Club, gathered in the emergency parking garage of St. Vincent Hospital on 86th Street in Indianapolis. To aid in bagging the salt, volunteers formed an assembly line. Each bagger had someone seal their bags. Other volunteers loaded pickup trucks to take the salt up the ER walkway. Members of the public can pick up bags for free. An estimated 7,000 bags of salt were bagged in 2 1/2 hours. “Be An Ice-Breaker” was started by Dr. Louis Profeta, a nationally recognized, award-winning writer and emergency physician at St. Vincent Hospital of Indianapolis. Zionsville Lions and Leos have been volunteers for the last seven years.
