Nickel Plate Arts plans epic party

Nickel Plate Arts is hosting a book release party for award-winning filmmaker and author Kate Chaplin’s novel “Shoki’s Bag.” This free, family-friendly event is from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 25 at 107 S. Eighth St., Noblesville.

After a bad experience on a film set, Chaplin found herself in therapy. After meeting with her psychologist, she had the idea for “Shoki’s Bag.”

“That night I dreamed that I was walking around the forest carrying a heavy garbage bag. The bag dripped something disgusting as I struggling to move forward,” she said, adding that letting her past baggage go “was an amazing experience for me, one I wanted to share to help others.”

Chaplin will read excerpts from her novel, sign books and answer questions. Her book has already been optioned for a movie that is set to start filming this fall in Indiana. The filmmakers are currently looking for a cast, crew members and filming locations.

“I’ve been looking at Brown County and Turkey Run a lot. I also love filming in Noblesville so I’m hoping to find some locations close to home,” said Chaplin.

At 2 p.m. Professional Strongman Gavin Rulon, who is starring in “Shoki’s Bag,” will perform stunts right out of the book, including bending steel, frying pans and horseshoes. Chaplin said the oddest thing she has seen Gavin bend is a wrench.

“I had never seen that before and thought it was unbendable,” she said.

Signed copies of Chaplin’s novel will be available for $15 and a percentage of the proceeds will go to Nickel Plate Arts to help support and promote art in Hamilton County.
