The ballot for the upcoming referendum that will settle the town versus city debate is available. Precinct committee members Rick Fain and Chad Garrard provided Current in Fishers with the ballot. Question One: Shall the town of Fishers and Fall Creek Township reorganize as a single political subdivision? Yes or No
- What it means: Under the 2006 Government Modernization Act, the Town of Fishers can present a plan to modernize the government, which includes combining Fall Creek Township with Fishers. If this is voted in, the governing body becomes a hybrid city, according to State Representative Kathy Richardson, of the Hamilton County Election Office. The city council, which will increase in number, can then appoint a mayor.
Question Two: Shall the town of Fishers change into a city? Yes or No
- What it means: Cut and dry, if a Fishers resident votes yes on this question, that resident is voting for a city government, in which residents vote for a city mayor, Richardson said. This is a traditional Indiana city with an elected council and elected mayor.
Not on the ballot: Fishers shall remain a town
- What it means: If a voter wishes for Fishers to remain a town, the resident must vote “no” on both questions.
