Meris Shotton’s dedication as a Prairie View Golf Club caddie in Carmel has paid off in a major way.

The senior recently was one of 16 Indiana student caddies to earn a Western Golf Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship, a full, four-year housing and tuition scholarship at either Indiana University or Purdue University. The scholarship is valued at an estimated $120,000 over four years. Shotton plans to major in biology with a pre-med program at Indiana University.

“This scholarship truly eases a heavy burden of student loans that I would have had to pay if not for this scholarship,” Shotton said. “The combination of college tuition and then medical school fees would have been crushing. My mother is a physical therapist and she has previously told me it took her 13 years to pay off her student loans. I am very grateful for this opportunity and I will be using it well.”

Shotton started caddying in May 2018. Her older brother, Orion, previously was a caddie.

“He told me that it was a nice summer job to have and that he really enjoyed the experience it gave him,” Shotton said. “Based on that, I wanted to try it. Although I have been caddying for a while now, I haven’t gotten into actually playing golf yet. But this may change in the years to come when I look back on my caddying days.

“The thing I enjoyed the most about caddying is getting to know the people I caddied for. It’s wonderful, and I’m glad I have those experiences to look back on.”

The four selection criteria are a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The caddies went through a virtual interview process.

Shotton has an unweighted grade point average of 3.6 and a weighted GPA of 4.0. One of her main activities is attending the House of Martial Arts in Carmel for 11 years.

“I participate in mixed martial arts,” she said. “This includes Hawaiian kenpo, boxing, self-defense, judo and jiu-jitsu. In Hawaiian kenpo, I am a black belt. In jiu-jitsu, I have a one stripe blue belt.”

Shotton also attends a weekly youth group at Northview Church.
