Carmel man dead after shootout with police on Main Street

A Carmel man is dead after a shootout with police officers Jan. 31 in the 400 block of W. Main Street.

According to the Carmel Police Dept., officers fired at Keith Scales, 60, after he raised a high-powered rifle at them. Scales was transported to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The incident began at approximately 11:25 a.m. Jan. 31 after police received a call about a person threatening suicide. As they were responding, they received information that gunshots had been fired.

Once officers reached the scene, they could see and hear gunshots being fired from out of the windows and doors of the residence. Several vehicles were hit, including one police vehicle. Police secured and evacuated the area and asked people to avoid west Main Street for several hours.

Investigation of the incident will be handled by the Fishers Police Dept. Anyone with information is asked to contact the non-emergency police line at 317-571-2580.
