Carmel Clay Schools hires first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer

Terri Roberts-Leonard has been named Carmel Clay Schools’ first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. The CCS school board approved the hire during the Dec. 14 school board meeting.

Roberts-Leonard’s start date is Jan. 19, 2021. She is currently the director of diversity and inclusion at Franklin College. She has also worked at the University of Cincinnati, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Morehead State University and Ball State University.

“I’m really thankful for the opportunity to serve,” Roberts-Leonard said at the school board meeting. “I’m about service and servant leadership, and I’m really looking forward to bringing my skill set here and learning from you all as well as you learning from me.”

The Greenwood resident has a bachelors’ degree in communications with a minor in African-American studies from the University of Cincinnati. She has a master’s degree in school counseling from Morehead State University and a masters of education in sports administration from Xavier University.

In her new role, Roberts-Leonard will work to recruit, retain and support a diverse staff, ensure a positive educational experience for a diverse student body and create a safe and welcoming environment for all students. She was one of 109 applicants for the position.

Roberts-Leonard and her husband, Eddie, have three children.
