CPD identifies 2 who died in Monday shootings

The Carmel Police Dept. has determined Monday’s shooting incident stemmed from a domestic situation that occurred in the 14300 block of Riverrock Court. Taylor Leigh Cox, 28, and the suspect, Julio Cesar Virula, 26, died from gunshot wounds. CPD stated Virula had threatened suicide. The original 911 caller reported the suspect had a gun. During the call, dispatchers heard gunshots in the background. While officers were responding, there were additional 911 calls reporting gunshots. Upon arrival, officers found two victims with gunshots wounds, and one, a 66-year-old woman, has been treated and released from a hospital. Officers located the suspect nearby and determined he was still armed, according to CPD. The suspect then led officers on a brief foot pursuit. In order to prevent any further danger to the community or officers, CPD stated, one officer discharged a service weapon. The suspect was pronounced dead. The official cause of death is pending completion of an autopsy. CPD stated the investigation will continue for weeks.
