Military news – Carmel High School graduate Bret Cunningham recently graduated from the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. A Purdue Air Force ROTC scholarship student in aeronautical/astronautical engineering, Cunningham graduated and commissioned in the Air Force in December 2008 and has flown the B-1B bomber in several tours abroad.

Museum event – The Museum of Miniature Houses will present Celebrations of Creativity and Craftsmanship at noon Feb. 26. MaryAnne Mathews will present Votes For Women! about the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment. The event is free to attend.

Winter Carnival – The Village of WestClay will host a Winter Carnival from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23. Events will take place in the Meeting House, 2000 N. New Market St. and on the University Green. Indoor activities will include an art show and art activities, children’s games, and refreshments. Outdoor activities (weather permitting) include a petting zoo, s’mores, ice carving demonstration, miniature train rides and carriage rides. The event is free and open to the public.

Kindergarten registration – Carmel Clay Schools’ kindergarten registration for the 2020-21 school year is under way. Students must be at least 5 years old by Aug. 1 to start kindergarten in August. When registering children, parents/guardians will need an official birth certificate (not a hospital record) and proof of residency. Immunization records must be submitted to the school by the first day of instruction. Parents are encouraged to register students by March 6. Heirbrandt reelected VP – Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt was once again elected vice president of the Indiana Association of County Commissioners East Central District during its annual conference.  In his role, Heirbrandt will represent elected county commissioners in the East Central district of the state, which includes the following counties: Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Randolph, Rush, Shelby, Tipton, Union and Wayne.

Documentary screening – Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 1605 E. 106th St., will host a free screening of the documentary “No Small Matter” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 16. The film explores how children learn and what can be done to change the perception of when learning begins. Strikes for Stansfield – Strikes for Stansfield is set for 1 to 3 p.m. March 1 at Woodland Bowl, 3421 E. 96th St. Net proceeds from the ninth annual event will provide funding for Fletcher Place Community Center’s food and clothing pantry, preschool, senior outreach and other initiatives. Winter Blast – Clay Terrace will present the fifth annual Winter Blast from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 15. Attendees can enjoy carriage and train rides, face painters, ice sculpture carvings, a hot chocolate bar and more. Activities will take place inside the Clay Terrace Village Green. College scholarship – RoadRunner Auto Transport has a $1,500 college scholarship available to a full-time high school, college or university student between the 17 and 21 years old. Governor’s Fellowship – Applications will be accepted through Feb. 28 for the 2020-2021 Governor’s Fellowship, a highly selective experience in Indiana state government that places fellows in various state agencies on a rotating basis throughout the year. The program is open to college graduates who receive their bachelor’s degrees in either the fall 2019 or spring 2020. Writing competition – Senior living community The Stratford is accepting applicants for its annual Silver Pen Writing Competition. The competition will award three local high school seniors with scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500. Hotel Carmichael hires – Coury Hospitality has appointed Jamie Hopwood as general manager and Zach Tharp as director of sales for Hotel Carmichael, a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel set to open in May at Carmel City Center. Hopwood previously was general manager of high-end boutique hotels in Colorado. Tharp previously worked as opening director of sales and marketing for the Hyatt Place and Hyatt House Downtown Indianapolis.

Home prices rise – Carmel home prices continued their upward trend to start the new year. According to F.C. Tucker Company, $427,910 was the average sale price for Carmel homes in January 2020, a 15.9 percent increase from this time last year. The average price per square foot for homes in Carmel also increased 6.6 percent, to $148.98, from January 2019. Homes in Carmel spent an average of three days longer on the market, selling 4.6 percent slower than this time last year.

Seven Corners president – Carmel-based Seven Corners, Inc., a travel insurance and specialty benefits company, named Jeremy Murchland as president. Previously, Murchland was serving as senior vice president of sales and marketing. Prior to Seven Corners, Murchland served as vice president of business development for ALOM Technology as well as executive director of sales for Ingram Micro. Murchland received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Bellevue University.

Jiffy Lube honored for art – Jiffy Lube of Indiana recently received the Americans for the Arts’ national Arts and Business Partnership Award, one of only 10 U.S. companies honored and the first company in Indianapolis to receive this award. Jiffy Lube of Indiana’s “Every Part Matters” project started as a way to cover up graffiti at a local store and has progressed into partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis. In addition to supporting and hiring local artists, they’ve also created a new apprentice program that will give paid experience to emerging artists. Two of the murals are in Carmel.

Firm hires chief innovation officer – Carmel-based Katz, Sapper & Miller, an accounting and consulting firm, has named Fady Qaddoura, former controller and CFO for the City of Indianapolis, as its first chief innovation officer, effective Jan. 13.Qaddoura joins KSM after a decade in public service, first for the Indiana General Assembly, then the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development and Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, before being appointed the controller and CFO for the City of Indianapolis by Mayor Joe Hogsett in 2016.

Bicycle Friendly Business – The League of American Bicyclists recognized the City of Carmel with a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Business award, earning it a place alongside 1,366 businesses across the country contributing to a movement to build a more Bicycle Friendly America. Accounting firm grows – Katz, Sapper & Miller announced that Indianapolis-based Caskey & Daily, P.C. has joined the accounting and consulting firm. Caskey & Daily’s notable healthcare practice will enable KSM to expand its own healthcare practice, which serves as a provider of tax and accounting services, consulting, fair market value assessments, transactions, and valuations for the complete spectrum of healthcare organizations. Hospice volunteers needed – Anew Hospice is recruiting volunteers to visit patients in facilities in Carmel, Noblesville and elsewhere in the Indianapolis area. Yoga training scholarship – Owners of The Hot Room, a hot yoga and hot Pilates studio, have created The Hot Room Leadership Institute Scholarship for People of Color. The full-tuition scholarship is open to any self-identified person of color who would like to deepen his or her yoga practice and gain skills to lead yoga classes. The scholarship will be available for each training hosted by The Hot Room Leadership Institute, a school for dedicated practitioners. Visitation policy – With the escalation of flu-like cases, Franciscan Health is has implemented a temporary visitation policy at its Carmel hospital. Only immediate family as identified by the patient or the patient’s designated representative will be allowed to visit. Visitors younger than 18 are not permitted unless they are seeking medical care or are the parents of pediatric patients (exceptions are made for postpartum visits).
