Column: Dare to be bold with colors, patterns

I think it’s safe to say that fall has arrived. The leaves around town are bursting with bold and beautiful colors. The application of this new palette of colors often causes us to see the world around us with a different or renewed sense of appreciation. In a design world where grays and whites predominate, a splash of color or pattern can be a welcome distraction.

There are times when material selection decisions are tempered by thoughts of how the selections will affect the future resale of their home, the concern being that if you personalize your selections too much, then you are limiting the pool of potential future buyers. Often, the response is to neutralize all of the major materials and “make a statement” with the paint color of your walls (because that’s easy to change when the time comes to sell your home).

Other clients will consider ease of future resale but opt to incorporate bold, beautiful materials that lift their spirits each time they see them. The homeowner of the project pictured found this floor tile and fell in love. It definitely makes a bold statement in the new master bathroom. All of the remaining materials were selected to complement the floor tile. The beauty of the new space is due in large part to the bold decision to incorporate the floor tile.

Don’t hesitate to be courageous or daring when making your material selections. Express yourself. Spark some joy. Be bold and beautiful.
