Lawrence at Lucas returns, gives kids chance to play on professional field

The Metropolitan District of Lawrence Township will conduct the second Lawrence at Lucas event Sept. 6.

The event, which features several football games with students of different age groups, began in 2016.

“In 2016, it was what we think is the district’s largest single event we ever had,” Director of Operations Grant Nesbit said. “We had over 8,000 people there last time, and we think we will break that this time. We rent out Lucas Oil Stadium for the entire day. No one else does this.”

Nesbit said the district’s band gets to practice at the stadium during the event, and elementary students, middle school students and students from the two high schools all get to play on the Indianapolis Colts’ home field.

The elementary student game starts at 5:30 p.m. The seventh-grade game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade game at 7 p.m. The high school varsity game between Lawrence Central and Lawrence North will be at 8 p.m.

Advance tickets are $5 for elementary students and $10 for everyone else. They are available at any of the district’s schools. Tickets will be $15 each at the gate the day of the event. All the concessions will be open at the stadium.

“Our goal is to give kids the opportunity to play at a professional sports venue,” Nesbit said.

Parking is $10.

“We are looking forward to a really fun night. We have a ton of student groups that participate in this, the elementary dance teams, the high school dance teams and the Marching Pride will perform at half time,” Nesbit said. “We have a couple hundred choir singers there doing the national anthem from both schools.”
