Former councilman dies – Former Carmel City Council member Bob Battreall died July 20. He served two terms on the council and subsequently served for three years on the Carmel Redevelopment Commission. Battreall was active in the Carmel Rotary Club, Carmel Dads’ Club, Carmel Booster Club and many other civic and faith-based organizations.

Veterans Hall of Fame – The Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame seeking nominations for its sixth class of veteran honorees. The nonprofit organization honors Hoosier veterans for service during and after active duty. Up to 15 veterans will be honored for military service achievements and/or community contributions. Lugar Series seeking applicants – The Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series is entering its 30th year of the program and is accepting applications for its 2019-2020 class. Library Lawn Party – The Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 4th Ave. SE will host a Library Lawn Party from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 7. The free event will include music, food, a mini book sale and activities for families.
Human trafficking awareness – Human trafficking involves more than just sexual exploitation, often including the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labor, marriage or the extraction of organs and tissues. Carmel Lodge No. 421, F.&A.M. will host a human trafficking awareness event at 7 p.m. Aug. 15. The event is open to the public, but seating is limited. RSVP to [email protected]. Host families needed – Youth for Understanding is an international exchange organization that facilitates summer, semester and year-long exchanges for students from more than 70 nations. Families are needed to host 13 high school students who arrive in this fall and will stay for one academic year. The students are from France, Germany, Brazil, Denmark, Mongolia, Ecuador, Kenya, China, Thailand and Japan. Veterans needed – Carmel High School history teacher Will Ellery is organizing a Global War on Terror symposium and is looking for veterans of the war to speak with students in small groups about their experiences. The meetings would be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Sept. 10. Almost all students at CHS were born after 9/11, and the event is designed to help them better understand the event. Pedal Perks – The Pedal Perks program is returning for its third year, with Hamilton County businesses offering deals to bike riders. The program runs from through Oct. 31 and has more than 30 businesses offering specials for customers who show proof of their ride. Square Donuts closes – Square Donuts at 14 S. Range Line Rd. in Carmel has closed its doors for the second time in two years. According to local media reports, Square Donuts owner Rick Comer, Jr. said the Carmel location and two others in Indianapolis have closed because of a disagreement with the licensee. The same licensee operates the three stores.

Pooch menu – Rosie’s Place, 1111 W. Main St. in Carmel, is offering a Pooch Menu on the Patio through Aug. 20 with proceeds benefiting the local Humane Society. The menu includes chopped chicken, chopped bacon or a combo bowl. Each meal will be served with a dish of cool water and an ear scratch. The bakery will also create pooch-friendly goodies.
Swan adds cyber security services – Carmel-based Swan Software Solutions is branching out into cyber security to help protect its customers from data breaches and cyber attacks. Swan Software Solutions has engineers combating cyber attacks by deploying services that test for vulnerabilities in a business’s networks, assets and applications. Cyber security services include vulnerability management, web application scanning, asset assessment and threat protection.
GadellNet moves – GadellNet Consulting Services has moved into a new office in Carmel on Hamilton Crossing Boulevard. The tech-driven space features a mix of private offices, open air workspaces, a gym, a kitchen, walking trails and more. With more than 9,000 square feet, GadellNet’s Indianapolis-based team will be able to grow into this space over the next several years. With an average growth rate of 30 percent over the last five years, GadellNet’s Indianapolis team plans to add at least five more employees to this office during the rest of 2019.
