Sub-24 hour overnight bike rides are growing in popularity throughout the nation as a less intimidating alternative to bicycle touring. Bike Carmel, a city program aimed at promoting cycling, will soon present its first bike ride of this type in Carmel.

The inaugural S24O Family Camping Ride begins 1 p.m. June 1 at Founders Park, 11675 Hazel Dell Pkwy. Families will bike 6 to 8 miles to West Park, where they will camp overnight and return to Founders Park at noon the following day. The event includes dinner, speeches by national cyclists and family camping activities.

“A lot of people can’t dedicate a whole weekend to going out for a camping ride,” Carmel Transportation Development Coordinator Kevin Whited said. “What we were really trying to do is show families that they can go for a ride, camp and not spend the entire weekend doing it.”

The Family Camping Ride is expected to be the first of many S24O bicycle rides hosted by Bike Carmel as an introduction for Carmel families to longer touring rides. Whited said bringing additional cycling events to the Carmel community is beneficial in more ways than one.

“At a basic level, it’s good for you. You get exercise. It gets you out of your house and into your community,” Whited said. “You can also use bicycling as transportation. You get exercise, you save money and you don’t pollute. It’s better for the environment.”

Registration is limited to the first 75 participants and is available at rollfast.wufoo.com/forms/2019-bike-carmel-s240/. Each participant will be provided an inaugural T-shirt, Frisbee and food for the trip.
