Two individuals are dead after a late-night car accident Feb. 1  in the northern part of the county.

First responders were dispatched to the 26600 block of southbound U.S. 31 just after 11 p.m. Callers reported one of the people involved in the crash was trapped in the vehicle while another was thrown from the car. Police say their initial crash investigation indicates a 2005 red Chevrolet Cobalt was driving southbound on U.S. 31 north of 266th Street when, for unknown reasons, it left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, approximately 1,500 feet north of the intersection.

The driver was identified by police as Coltin D. Heath-Brumfiel, 23, Kokomo. Heath-Brumfiel was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say it is unknown if he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The passenger was identified as Meghann K. Clement, 25, Kokomo. Clement was trapped in the vehicle and also was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say she was wearing a seatbelt.

Witnesses of the crash told deputies the vehicle changed lanes and fishtailed before leaving the roadway and striking the tree. Police said per policy, toxicology tests were performed to determine if alcohol or other substances contributed to the fatal crash. Test results are pending.

Anyone with information pertaining to the crash is asked to contact Hamilton County Public Safety Communications at 317-773-1282.
