Clarification – In the Oct. 30 edition of Current in Carmel, a story about Hamilton County sheriff candidate Dennis Quakenbush should have stated that current Sheriff Mark Bowen is not running again because of term limits.

Christmas open house – John Kirk Furniture Galleries, 12345 Old Meridian St., Carmel, will host an open house Nov. 3-4 in its Christmas Shop. Guests can enjoy appetizers, as well as beer and wine, and an offer of a 25-percent reduction on all holiday items.

School safety academy – The Parent School Safety Academy is an interactive program to teach parents of Carmel Clay Schools students school safety principles and fundamentals that guide responses. Best small cities – Personal-finance website WalletHub has ranked Carmel as the second best small city in America. The rankings compared more than 1,200 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across 40 key indicators of livability ranging from housing costs to school-system quality to restaurants per capita.

Women warriors – PrimeLife Enrichment, 1078 Third Ave. SW in Carmel, will present Honoring Women Warriors at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 7. The free event will include stories from PrimeLife members who served in the armed forces during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Learn more at primelifeenrichment.org.

Emergency management group honored – Hamilton County’s Local Emergency Planning Committee won six awards at the annual Indiana Emergency Response Commission Conference held Oct. 17. It received the Chairman’s Award and was honored in the following categories: Facility Outreach, Public Outreach, Data Management, Exercise and Training.

Indiana ranks low for political engagement—According to a study from WalletHub, a personal finance website, Indiana ranks fourth on a list of least politically engaged states and the District of Columbia, with only New Mexico, Hawaii and Alabama ranking lower. For more, visit wallethub.com.

Goalkeeper earns award – Austin Bodner, a Carmel resident and 2015 Brebeuf graduate, was a recipient of the NCAA Division III Player of the Week award from United Soccer Coaches. A goalkeeper and senior at DePauw University, Bodner had a pair of shutouts against Ohio Wesleyan and Allegheny.

No Shave November – Officers and employees of the Carmel Police Dept. are joining together to raise awareness about cancer and gather donations for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the month of November by participating in “No Shave November.” Donate at crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/cpdnoshavenovember or by dropping off a check at the police department, 3 Civic Square in Carmel. Reserve skating times online – The City of Carmel has unveiled a new online ticketing service to make it easier to reserve time and ice skates for the upcoming holiday and winter seasons of skating at the Ice at Center Green. The new website utilizes a program called Ticket Spice and is an online ticket purchasing portal that will enable visitors to guarantee their spot on the ice by purchasing tickets and reserving skates in advance. Town hall meetings – State Sen. John Ruckelshaus (R-Indianapolis) invites resident of District 30 to a bipartisan town hall meetings set for 7 p.m. Nov. 8 and Dec. 6 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St. in Indianapolis.

Author luncheon – India Hicks, author of “A Taste of England,” will be featured at a book signing and luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Woodstock Club, 1301 W. 38th St. in Indianapolis. Democratic women to meet – The Democratic Women of Hamilton County will hold a meeting Nov. 17 at the Delaware Township Trustee Building, 9090 E. 131st St. in Fishers. Coffee will be available starting at 9:30 a.m. with the meeting beginning at 10 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods for donation to a food pantry.

Military officers to meet – The White River and Indianapolis chapters of the Military Officers of America Indiana Council will host the 2018 joint annual meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 13 at American Legion Post 155, 852 Main St. in Carmel. Museum event – The Museum of Miniature Houses, 111 E. Main St. in Carmel, will host Bring Your Doll Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10. Visitors of any age may bring a doll or action figure and enjoy a special tour of the museum’s doll collection. Admission applies.

Asherwood Golf Course open – For a limited time this fall, golfers can enjoy the luxury of a private course experience while supporting a worthy cause. The Asherwood Estate Golf Courses of Carmel are open for play from now through Nov. 4, with proceeds benefiting the Great American Songbook Foundation. Tee times are available Tuesdays through Sundays in half-day or full-day packages starting at $1,500 per foursome, which includes a tax-deductible donation. Civil War Roundtable – Bruce Alladadice will present “Obnoxious to a Free People –Conscription and the Civil War” at 7 p.m. at the Nov. 14 meeting of the Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable at Carmel City Hall, 1 Civic Square. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Campaign sign rules – As the election approaches, INDOT reminds Hoosiers that campaign signs are prohibited from state right-of-way. Areas that should remain clear include all intersections and interchanges. Where the right of way is not clearly marked, boundaries may be estimated as the fence line, the back of the ditch, or behind utility poles.

Engineering opportunities for students – INDOT is offering civil engineering students scholarships and paid employment during summer breaks and upon graduation. Students must be accepted or enrolled full time in one of Indiana’s certified civil engineering schools and apply using the form at INDOTScholarship.IN.gov. Applications must be submitted by Dec. 31.

Special exhibit – The Museum of Miniature Houses presents the Founders’ Exhibit, celebrating the museum’s 25th anniversary. Houses and room boxes made by the co-founders will be on display, as well as historical artifacts of how Main Street looked 25 years ago, handwritten financial ledgers from the museum’s first years, and more. Exhibit runs through Jan. 6, 2019.

Legislative internships – The Indiana Senate Republican Caucus is offering paid spring-semester internships in its legislative, legal, policy, communications and information technology offices during the 2019 session of the Indiana General Assembly. Youth Leadership program open – United Way of Central Indiana is accepting applications for the 2019 Youth Leadership United Program. This program teaches high school students about the nonprofit sector and how to serve on a nonprofit board. Christmas Bazaar – The St. Augustine Guild 2345 W. 86th St., will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 2 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 3. Items for sale will include holiday decorations, home décor, baked goods, gifts, and more. All proceeds benefit St. Augustine Home residences, which are cared for by Little Sisters of the Poor.

Youth volunteer nominations sought – From now through Nov. 6. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is looking for Indiana’s top youth volunteers of the year. Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months. Ladies tea – Fellowship in Christ Church, 310 N. Range Line Rd., will host Coffee, Tea, and Thee for ladies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays. This is open to all women in the community and there is no cost to attend.

Opioid crisis discussion – INSTEP will host a discussion on Substance Use Disorder from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Carmel United Methodist Church, 621 S. Range Line Road. The discussion will cover the opioid crisis, how substances affect the brain and what can be done about it. The event is free, open to the public and includes childcare. Prevent falls – Franciscan Health will host a Stethoscope Series event, “Hold Steady and Prevent Falls,” at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Franciscan Health Carmel, 12188-B N. Meridian St. The free event will cover how loss of muscle tone, dizziness, changes in eyesight or medications can affect balance and lead to falls in people age 65 and older. Hospital launches valet parking – Free valet parking is now available for patients and visitors at Indiana University Health North Hospital. The valet is stationed at the north entrance of the hospital. When drivers are ready to retrieve their car, they may text the valet team or stop by the valet stand. Valet parking is available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Housing market shift – The housing market in Carmel shifted to the buyer’s favor in terms of price. According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Carmel in September 2018 was $359,585 at an average of $139.20 per square foot, a 9.4 percent price decrease. Homes in the city sold a significant 30 days faster than this time last year at 37 days.

No Label at the Table earns award – About Special Kids will recognize No Label at the Table of Carmel on Nov. 1 at the 2018 ASK Founders Awards. The award honors individuals or organizations whose work and leadership honors the vision of the founders of ASK to help children with special needs lead better lives. Milestone achieved – Daniel Gordon of Zionsville has sold is 25,000th GEICO policy, an achievement that puts him in an elite class and symbolizes his dedication to customer service. Gordon works at the Carmel office and has spent 12 years with the company.

Corrections Officers needed – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for Correctional Officers at the Adult Jail and Women’s Annex. The Jail Division has implemented a new application/testing procedure. Interested applicants must register for a test date at empco.net/ind/ and specify test results be forwarded to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. After the test is complete, download and submit the Application for Corrections Officer at hamiltoncounty.in.gov/555/County-Jail. Deadline is Nov. 15.
