Best small cities – Personal-finance website WalletHub has ranked Carmel as the second best small city in America. The rankings compared more than 1,200 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across 40 key indicators of livability ranging from housing costs to school-system quality to restaurants per capita.

Emergency management group honored – Hamilton County’s Local Emergency Planning Committee won six awards at the annual Indiana Emergency Response Commission Conference held Oct. 17. Goalkeeper earns award – Austin Bodner, a Carmel resident and 2015 Brebeuf graduate, was a recipient of the NCAA Division III Player of the Week award from United Soccer Coaches. A goalkeeper and senior at DePauw University, Bodner had a pair of shutouts against Ohio Wesleyan and Allegheny.

Reserve skating times online – The City of Carmel has unveiled a new online ticketing service to make it easier to reserve time and ice skates for the upcoming holiday and winter seasons of skating at the Ice at Center Green. The new website utilizes a program called Ticket Spice and is an online ticket purchasing portal that will enable visitors to guarantee their spot on the ice by purchasing tickets and reserving skates in advance. Campaign sign rules – As the election approaches, INDOT reminds Hoosiers that campaign signs are prohibited from state right-of-way. Areas that should remain clear include all intersections and interchanges. Where the right of way is not clearly marked, boundaries may be estimated as the fence line, the back of the ditch, or behind utility poles.
Engineering opportunities for students – INDOT is offering civil engineering students scholarships and paid employment during summer breaks and upon graduation. Special exhibit – The Museum of Miniature Houses presents the Founders’ Exhibit, celebrating the museum’s 25th anniversary. Hospital launches valet parking – Free valet parking is now available for patients and visitors at Indiana University Health North Hospital. The valet is stationed at the north entrance of the hospital. When drivers are ready to retrieve their car, they may text the valet team or stop by the valet stand. Valet parking is available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Housing market shift – The housing market in Carmel shifted to the buyer’s favor in terms of price. According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Carmel in September 2018 was $359,585 at an average of $139.20 per square foot, a 9.4 percent price decrease. Homes in the city sold a significant 30 days faster than this time last year at 37 days.

Corrections Officers needed – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for Correctional Officers at the Adult Jail and Women’s Annex. The Jail Division has implemented a new application/testing procedure. Interested applicants must register for a test date at empco.net/ind/ and specify test results be forwarded to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. After the test is complete, download and submit the Application for Corrections Officer at hamiltoncounty.in.gov/555/County-Jail. Deadline is Nov. 15.
