“We, as a district, need to make sure we are watching and keeping up with the changing times and how we are going to educate those kids,” she said. “Just this morning I sat in and watched one of the elementary schools go through (a safety) drill.”

Another topic Willis said she would focus on is innovation.

“We need to make sure we are staying innovative and our teachers are continuing with increasing their knowledge on how to do best practices, which is why we implemented professional development days,” she said.

Willis said a district-wide vision and cooperaration are essential to making the board function efficiently.

“I think a lot of people don’t understand how a school board works,” she said. “To have a successful district, you have to have a cohesive board and administrators all on the same page. We all have to be following a strategic plan. We always have to follow out our vision and our mission.”

Willis grew up in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School in 1999. She played for Westfield Youth Soccer Association and cheered for Westfield Youth Sports, Inc. She also ran track and field for WWS and participated in 4-H for 10 years. She graduated from Miami University in 2003. She and her husband Anthony have two children in WWS schools.
