U.S. House District 5 forums – Incumbent Susan Brooks (R) and challenger Dee Thornton (D) will participate in candidate forums 6-9 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Anderson City Auditorium and 7-9 p.m. Nov. 1 at Shamrock Springs Elementary School, Westfield. The events are sponsored by the League of Woman Voters and are free and open to the public. Voting hours for the general election are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 6. Early voting began Oct. 10 and will be under way through Nov. 5.

Governor appointments – Gov. Eric J. Holcomb has announced several appointments and reappointments to various state boards and commissions. Dr. Elizabeth Cunningham of Carmel was named to the Behavioral Health & Human Services Licensing Board.

Learn about various faiths – Carmel Interfaith Alliance and the Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Human Relations will co-sponsor Meet Your Neighbor, a free forum to discuss faith traditions. The series will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday evenings. Meeting topics are: Oct. 18 – The Hindu Faith; Oct. 25 – The Christian Faith; Nov. 1 – The Muslim Faith. Meetings will be held at Carmel City Hall.

Ivy Tech Foundation board appointments – The Ivy Tech Foundation has announced new appointments to its board of directors. Carmel resident Lauren Salerno was among the six new members named. 

Campaign sign rules – As the election approaches, INDOT reminds Hoosiers that campaign signs are prohibited from state right-of-way. Areas that should remain clear include all intersections and interchanges. Where the right of way is not clearly marked, boundaries may be estimated as the fence line, the back of the ditch, or behind utility poles.

Shredding, electronics recycling event – An electronics recycling and shredding drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Creekside Middle School, 126th Street and Shelbourne Road. Shredding is $5 per box. Electronics recycling is free except for tube TVs and monitors, which are $10 each. Also accepted will be prescription drugs. Please no paints, light bulbs, tires, landscape waste, toxic or household hazardous waste. 

Engineering opportunities for students – INDOT is offering civil engineering students scholarships and paid employment during summer breaks and upon graduation. Students must be accepted or enrolled full time in one of Indiana’s certified civil engineering schools and apply using the form at INDOTScholarship.IN.gov. Applications must be submitted by Dec. 31.

Reduced-cost cat adoptions—With a recent influx of cats over one year old, the Humane Society for Hamilton County will be offering $15 adoptions for these cats. The fee covers spay/neuter surgery, age appropriate vaccines, microchip, FIV/Feline Leukemia testing, a free wellness exam and a sample bag of Hill’s Science Diet food. Special exhibit – The Museum of Miniature Houses presents the Founders’ Exhibit, celebrating the museum’s 25th anniversary. Houses and room boxes made by the co-founders will be on display, as well as historical artifacts of how Main Street looked 25 years ago, handwritten financial ledgers from the museum’s first years, and more. Exhibit runs through Jan. 6, 2019.

Tour de Cure – The American Diabetes Association presents Tour de Cure, a ride/run/walk event on Oct. 20 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Cost is $10. Legislative internships – The Indiana Senate Republican Caucus is offering paid spring-semester internships in its legislative, legal, policy, communications and information technology offices during the 2019 session of the Indiana General Assembly. Youth Leadership program open – United Way of Central Indiana is accepting applications for the 2019 Youth Leadership United Program. Corrections Officers needed – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for Correctional Officers at the Adult Jail and Women’s Annex. The Jail Division has implemented a new application/testing procedure.
