This year’s Fall Festival Parade is expected to showcase more than 90 floats representing the community.

“It’s a small-town America event,” said George Tikijian, parade chairman for the Lion’s Club.

Tikijian estimates that he’s been running the parade for 22 years and believes it’s a way he can give back to the community.

“You can do little things for people one at a time or you could do one big thing that hopefully makes a lot of people happy for a couple of hours,” he said.

The festival theme “Be a Superhero” is determined by the Fall Festival committee, but Tikijian said his perspective is sometimes a bit different than other committee members.

“My drive is that the theme be something that’s fun to make floats,” he said. “I don’t hesitate to put my two cents in.”

Besides collecting entry forms and fees, he also is tasked with creating the lineup for the parade to ensure a flow that keeps the event interesting.

The Sept. 8 parade begins at Zionsville Community High School  at 10 a.m. and winds down Mulberry Street to Ash Street, then turns onto Main Street where it ends near the Hawthorne Street intersection.

Prior to the start, a committee reviews each float and awards three top prizes: Best Theme, Parade Chairman’s Choice and President’s Choice. Banners are awarded to the winning floats that they can display on the parade route.

In previous years, more than 100 floats have been entered. Bur recently, the figure has been closer to 90.

“It’s great for the kids. They have a lot of fun watching, and the kids who participate have a lot of fun being in a parade,” Tikijian said. “I really think our parade is a neat thing to have.”
