Eastwood takes on new role

Boone County resident Kent Eastwood has transitioned from chief deputy prosecutor to prosecuting attorney. He replaced Todd Meyer in June. Meyer resigned to become an associate director at the Indiana Dept. of Child Services.

“I was already the Republican candidate for the fall election,” Eastwood said. “No Democrats filed (to run) against me. As of Jan. 1, I was going to be the next prosecutor.”

By law, a caucus must be held to determine a replacement for the rest of Meyer’s term. Eastwood was was chosen to complete the last few months of the term. Eastwood has worked as the second-in-command in the Boone County prosecutor’s office for the last seven years.

“My role was to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Prosecutors and staff and run the big investigations, in addition to being in charge of the drug task force in terms of those prosecutions,” Eastwood said.

His new role involves a different set of responsibilities.

“Right now, I’m more involved in the nitty-gritty than I probably will be in the future,” Eastwood said. “We’re still trying to figure out what my role will be because I do want to take a different approach than in the past.”

Eastwood is a graduate of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory High School and Indiana University Law School. He worked in the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office shortly after graduating.

“While I was going to law school I was working in the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office,” Eastwood said. “Before I had even graduated from law school and before I was even an attorney I had already tried 13 major felony cases.”

The case load Eastwood is inheriting from Meyer includes a few high-profile murder cases, including that of Anthony Baumgardt, the man accused of killing Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett. If convicted, Baumgardt could face the death penalty.
